Defibrillator or Pacemaker - Oral Health Care Considerations
Address any underlying comorbid disease or condition:
Cardiac Disease#
- Rheumatic fever
- Congestive heart failure
- Valvular heart disease
- Ventricular function impairment
- Cardiomyopathy
- Mitral valve prolapse
- Thromboembolic events, including angina, heart attack, and stroke
- Decreased cardiac output
- Hypertension
- Hypotension
- Pulmonary congestion
Noncardiac Disease#
- Acute infection
- Pulmonary conditions including lung carcinoma
- Hyperthyroidism
- Excessive alcohol intake
- Diabetes
Proximity to electromagnetic generating devices in a dental setting has not been shown to have an effect on today’s pacemakers and defibrillators.
No antibiotic prophylaxis is needed at any time after placement of these devices.
Medical Complexity Status - Defibrillator/Pacemaker#
| Defibrillator/ Pacemaker | MCS1C | MCS2C |
|---|---|---|
| Anticipated complication | Controlled/ stable | Uncontrolled/ unstable |
| Hemostasis | Minor | Minor |
| Microbial susceptibility | None | None |
| Drugs/ drug interactions | Minor | Major |
| Stress/trauma | Minor | Major |
