Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) - Oral Health Care Considerations
- Ascertain if the STD is active or nonactive.
- Check for oral lesions associated with an STD, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV)
, and human papilloma virus (HPV)
infections. Be aware that these infections may be transmitted by direct contact.
- Determine if cardiomyopathy-associated syphilis requires antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures.
- Address systemic STDs such as hepatitis B infection (HBV) and HIV disease accordingly.
